YOUR CATARACT SURGERY

The Cataract Surgery Journey

Knowing what to expect can make your cataract surgery experience much less stressful. Your care happens in three simple stages.

N
Step 01

Your Consultation

During your consultation, your ophthalmologist will:

  • Examine your eyes
  • Determine whether cataracts are causing your vision problems
  • Discuss the benefits and risks of surgery
  • Answer your questions

If surgery is appropriate, you'll be placed on the surgical waitlist.

At this stage, you do not need to choose your lens implant.

N
Step 02

Eye Measurements

Your second appointment is dedicated to precise measurements of your eye.

These measurements allow us to:

  • Calculate the most appropriate lens power
  • Determine which lens options are suitable
  • Plan your surgery as accurately as possible

Some patients may require preparation before measurements, including:

  • Removing contact lenses in advance
  • Treating dry eye disease to improve measurement accuracy

If you're considering an advanced lens, additional testing and planning (known as refractive services) may also be recommended.

N
Step 03

Surgery & Recovery

After surgery, you'll receive ongoing care to ensure your eye heals properly.

Your follow-up typically includes:

  • A safety check the day after surgery
  • A follow-up appointment approximately one week later
  • If you need cataract surgery on both eyes, usually the second eye is done in three weeks to one month
  • A visit with your regular optometrist should be planned about six weeks after surgery
